Psychology Lovers Club: “Trauma and Recovery” by Judith Herman

Psychology Lovers Club: Reading Psychology Classics

The book of the month in January is Trauma and Recovery: The Aftermath of Violence-―From Domestic Abuse to Political Terror by Judith Herman (orig. published in 1992, 2015). This is a foundational text on understanding trauma survivors and how one can heal from traumatic events, be it child abuse, war or political terror. At the heart of the book is a unique approach to recovery that demands that the therapist depart from a stance of moral neutrality, working slowly toward integration rather than catharsis.
